Section 1:
To be a great nation we need
to colonize
In 1800 both france and
Britain had large empires, and continued to grow during the 19th
century
in 1870, Germany and Italy
become united countries for the 1st time, and both wanted to develop
overseas empire
Another catalyst that will
eventually be the greatest war in the world anyone had ever knew.
Strong competition between
European powers for expansion, especially in Africa.
By 1914, large parts of the
world were controlled by various eurpoean powers
The competition caused several
disputes Moroxxo Incident in 1906 and 1911 between France and Germany. Race of dreadnoughts.
In 1906, Britain launched the
HMS dreadnought, which started the race to build stronger, bigger and faster
battleships.

Section 3:
Prussian war (franco Prussian war):
The Franco-Prussian War or Franco-German
War (German: Deutsch–Französischer
Krieg, French: Guerre
franco-allemande),
often referred to in France as the War
of 1870[6][page needed] (19 July 1870 – 10 May 1871), was a
significant conflict pitting the Second French Empire against the Kingdom of Prussia and its allies in the North German Confederation, as well as the South German
states of Baden, Württemberg, Bavaria and Hesse-Darmstadt.
The
conflict emerged from tensions regarding the German unification. A war against France was deemed
necessary to unite the North German Confederation and the independent southern
German states, while France was preoccupied by the emergence of a powerful
Prussia. Napoleon III seized on a supposed insult in the Ems Dispatch to declare war, which most French
leaders expected to win.
The
German coalition quickly took charge. Its forces were superior, due to much
better training and leadership, and more effective use of modern technology.[7] A series of swift Prussian and
German victories in eastern France culminating in theBattle of Sedan,
saw Napoleon III and his whole army captured on 2 September. Yet this did not
end the war, as the Third Republic was declared in Paris on 4
September 1870 and French resistance continued under the Government of National Defence and Adolphe Thiers.
Over a five-month campaign, the German forces defeated the newly recruited
French armies in a series of battles fought across northern France. Following a prolonged siege, Paris fell on 28 January 1871.
The German states proclaimed their union as the German Empire under the Prussian king, Wilhelm I, uniting Germany as a nation-state.
The final Treaty of Frankfurt of 10 May 1871 gave Germany most of Alsace and some parts of Lorraine which became the Imperial territory
of Alsace-Lorraine.
Following
defeat, a left-wing revolt broke out in Paris against the new French republic.
Known as the Paris Commune,
it was a landmark event in the revolutionary seizure of power by the masses,
but it was harshly crushed by Adolphe Thiers.
The unification of Germany into an empire in its own right, with the new industrialization of the nation, shifted the European balance of power and Otto von Bismarck maintained great authority in
international affairs for two decades. France's determination to regain
Alsace-Lorraine would subsequently be a major factor in France's involvement in World War I.[8]
Class 2:
Section 1:
By 1907,
Europe was divided into 2
armed camps.
– 1870, Germany became a united country with
an attitude:
to be like Britain! – Germany worried about French attack to
regain Alsace
and Lorraine, won by Germany
this year.
France builds up more soldiers on
borders,
fearing attack from Germany! – Vast Austrian Empire in danger of falling
apart, some
looking for independence,
needed a
strong ally.
– 1879,
Austria and Germany form an alliance. – 1882, Italy saw benefit in joining the
group, so
in this year,
the “Triple Alliance” was formed. – 1893, France formed an alliance with
Russia,
both fearing
Germany and the “TA”. – 1904, IN the past, France had been a rival of
Britain.
Britain was worried about growing
German power.
In this year, France and
Britain kiss
and make up.
– 1907,
Britain and Russia make a similar
agreement,
and the “Triple Entente” was
formed.
• The British
motive was to prevent
Germany from
taking over all of Europe.
Germany
responded that the Triple
Entente had
been formed to surround and
threaten
Germany.

Section 3:
Domino effect:
The domino effect is a chain
reaction that occurs when a small change causes a similar
change nearby, which then causes another similar change, and so on in linear sequence.
The term is best known as a mechanical effect, and is used as an analogy to
a falling row of dominoes. It
typically refers to a linked sequence of events where the time between
successive events is relatively small. It can be used literally (an observed
series of actual collisions) or metaphorically (causal linkages within systems
such as global finance or politics).

The rise of the dictators
fascism: a way of organizing a
society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the
people and in which people are not allowed to disafree with the government:
very harsh control or authority
Pror to WWI, countries had
been split into two main groups or factions. In the 1930’s a strong movement
was underway to bring “FACISM” into modern government.

Empire before and during World War II.

More and more army troop.
End of world war 2 Japan got a lot of country of asia.
Why did Germany and Italy arrive in Germany? Why did they
have in common? they want to conquer.
New alliance are forming, now between democracies and
dictatorship.
main features of a Democracy:
- everybody
can vote and help choose a government.
- voters
have a choice between parties.
- government
power and terms are limited.
- Everybody,
including the government must obey the laws of the land.
- Individual
and corporate freedoms: freedom of speech, assembly, religion etc are protected
by the law
facism was the answer to communism. Democracy is not.
Under a facist government it can develop quickly, but in a
democracy government will not develop quickly because its hard to make everyone
agree on something.
Communist dictatorship were in place now (UUSR) for the first
time. The new China government (Kuo Ming Tang) is dealing with BOTH a Japanese
incursion And the onslaught of internal Communist undermining.
3 Case Studies:”
-USSR- Communist Dictatorship (page 118)

Summing up Germany in the
1930s
The Nazi party begins. The National
Socialist Workers Party.
They had a solution
A young man. poor started
joining the meetings, named Hitler.
By 1932 The Nazi Party was the
largest in the Reichstag (German Parliament)
In 1933, the president of
Germany (Hindenburg) appointed Hitler as Chancellor (Prime Minister) (This was
a trick by the Nazis.)
The trick:
He then made common cause with
Hitler, persuading President Hindenburg to appoint Hitler chancellor and
himself vice-chancellor. He promised the president that he would restrain
Hitler's worst tendencies and that a majority of the Cabinet would go to
non-Nazis. As Hindenburg's current chancellor could no longer gain a majority
in the Reichstag, and Hitler could bring together a larger swath of the masses
and a unified right/conservative/nationalist coalition, the president gave in.
In January 1933, Hitler was named chancellor of Germany.
Media was taken over
(goebbles)
Education was modified to
political purposes (use today anyone?)
Jews became targets (in 1941,
Jews became “enemies of the state” and were rounded up for prison camps as
well.
In 1933 Hitler and the Pope
signed a “corncordat” Agreement, for the Pope to recognize Hitler’s government
and Hitler to allow the church to remain in Germany.
Industry improved,
unemployment dropped to almost “0”
Hitler commissioned Ferdinand
Porshe to design a “Volks Wagon”
